On Friday, Sunrise revealed it is making a live-action video based on the Gundam Build spinoff franchise celebrating the 40th anniversary of Bandai's Gundam model kit series. Katsuyuki Motohiro directs the tentatively titled "Shin Gundam Create Divers" film. Sunrise didn't announce video release date.
Gundam's Gundam Build spinoff series launched in 2013 with Gundam Build Fighters anime. The anime takes place in a world where people can build Gundam model kits and submit them to combat in a virtual battlefield. The series earned Gundam Build Fighters Try in 2015, and Gundam Build Divers in 2018. The latest entry in the series, Gundam Build Divers Re: RISE, premiered last October. This April will premiere a second season.
Bandai introduced his first Gundam model kits (commonly called "Gunpla," short for "Gundam plastic model") in 1980, initially selling not only the popular mobile suits of the series, but other combat vehicles. Since then, the model kit line has concentrated on mobile suits and has expanded with new Gundam series designs and improvements on older designs. The line offers different model "grades," with different scales, assembly complexity, and design fidelity.
Motohiro is perhaps best known in anime as the chief director of the first two Psycho-Pass series and the 2015 franchise film. He is also Atom's chief director: The Start, Human Missing, and FLCL Alternative Projects. He directed Ajin's live-action film adaptations: Demi-Human and Laughing Under Clouds. He's also a self-professed fan of Gundam models.
Anime studio Production I.G and video and music company Avex unveiled live-action film label Cinema Lab in March 2019. At the time of the announcement, the firms announced that the label produced a film or films helmed by directors Mamoru Oshii and Katsuyuki Motohiro.
Currently making a live action Hollywood Gundam film with comic book creator Brian K. Vaughan (Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina, Runaways) as scriptwriter and executive producer.
